The US president-elect Joe Biden has some connections with Ireland, with his great-grandfather hailing from Ballina, Co Mayo. Locals in his ancestral home have been celebrating his win. They even have a mural of the future president in the town.
When President Biden inevitably comes to visit his cousins in Ballina, it would be great to give him a pint of Mescan or Reel Deel in the local pub, rather than the standard-issue pint of Guinness. We should give him a more genuine Mayo experience and show him that Ireland is no longer a one-trick pony.
Small local breweries don’t have the marketing power that companies like Diageo have. Giving them a little push like this could be an invaluable boost to small breweries and local jobs in the area. Guinness and other well-known beers are going nowhere. The little guys are more worthy of the exposure, and this could fit in well with the recent push to shop local.
